Rooftop Units

A rooftop or packaged unit is a system that contains all the components needed to provided conditioned air into a commercial space. These systems are usually found in retail, industrial, schools and churches. Rooftop units are normally installed on a rooftop however where this may not be possible they can be installed on a slab at ground level.

Rooftop units are energy efficient and even more so when an economizer is used. Economizers are used for ventilation. Economizers make use of outdoor air and use it for cooling when conditions allow. There are four types of economizers:

• A Dry Bulb – has a sensor that can detect when outdoor air can be used to cool the space.
• A Single Enthalpy – can detect acceptable humidity levels to be used for cooling the space.
• Differential Enthalpy – measures the return air and outdoor air and uses dampers to optimize the unit.
• Integrated Differential – operates the same as a differential system with the capability of communicating with the thermostat.
